Colostomy
- End Colostomy
- An end colostomy is created with one end of transected colon, mobilizing the colon to maintain blood supply via the marginal artery.
- The transected end is then brought through the abdominal wall, the staple line removed, and matured by suturing the edges of bowel to the skin.
- Loop colostomy
- A loop colostomy is created by bringing an entire loop of colon through the abdominal wall and making a transverse incision on the antimesenteric wall of the bowel.
- The cut edges are then folded back and sutured to the skin, opening both lumens to allow for decompression.
- Transverse or sigmoid colon can be used for loop colostomies.
- A supporting rod or looped catheter is placed below the common edge of bowel in a loop colostomy to keep it from retracting.
